À la croisée des recherches sur le vieillissement et les migrations internationales, le terrain d’investigation des familles transnationales offre de nouvelles pistes de réflexion sur les solidarités et les prises en charge des parents vieillissants. Des études de terrain effectuées en Inde auprès des parents (de haute caste brahmane) dont les enfants ont migré vers des pays occidentaux, ainsi qu’à Singapour et Toronto auprès de ces enfants désignés par le terme de Non Resident Indian (NRI) , ont permis d’étudier l’organisation des relations de care (prises en charge au sens large, à la fois matérielle, physique, émotionnelle, et économique, ou seva e n Inde) et de saisir les conséquences de la décohabitation résidentielle entre générations dans une nouvelle géographie familiale. L’analyse de l’espace-temps de ces familles transnationales est d’abord donnée pour préciser comment l’idéologie fonctionnelle de la famille existe en dépit des kilomètres. C’est finalement l’essence dynamique de l’institution familiale qui ressort de ces arrangements à distance. En accord avec la sociologie formelle de Simmel, la notion de socioplastie est proposée pour saisir comment des faits sociaux comme les relations de care adoptent des formes et des structures variées en fonction des contextes (résilience).
