Abstract
Resume: Bien qu'elle ait diversifie sa thematique, la production litteraire recente destinee aux adolescents ne parvient guere a insuffler un renouveau a ses recits. Ce paradoxe s'explique en partie par la permanence d'une vision coloniale de l'identite et de l'unite canadiennes, qui tend a imposer un heritage culturel commun, et se percoit dans l'infrastructure narrative incitant les heros a choisir l'uniformite et a ignorer la pluralite. L'auteur analyse la representation des personnages et les problemes d'identite auxquels ils sont confrontes, et conclut que, dans la plupart des cas, les personnages en viendront a opter pour l'ideologie dominante et les schemes de comportement traditionnels. Summary: Although Canadian fiction for young adults broadened its range of themes, they are imperfectly embodied in the narratives told. A colonial approach to issues of identity and unity is demonstrated in the desirability of a common culture and heritage and in the narrative pressure on the characters to choose uniformity over multidimensionality. In this paper look at the representations of characters, the identity issues which concern them, and the ways in which those issues are resolved. The mutually-exclusive binaries used to analyze groups and the polarized choices that are put to them become their either-or solutions. The hazards are that the standards of achievement and meaning for young people will be geared to suit the prevailing ideology and that their actions fit the established categories of behaviour.
