created and has installed a temporary exhibit entitled "Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race," mounted it as a web exhibit, and published a companion volume by the same name.The three forms of Deadly Medicine described here deal with similar subject matter, but taken collectively they add up to an unparalleled educational and emotional experience.In this review we will first consider the gallery and web exhibits, then the edited collection.We conclude our discussion with commentary on the totality of this project, the synergies and differences between print and visual cultures, and some remarks on the current effects of the Nazi legacy on museums and biomedicine.Although exhibits on aspects of Nazi medicine have previously been undertaken in Austria and Germany, such as Der Wert des Menschen: Medizin in Deutschland 1918-1945 (The Value of the Human Being: Medicine in Germany, 1918-1945 which travelled to America and Canada), 3 the Holocaust Memorial Museum's exhibit is the first to be designed in the United States on this topic.It will not be available for viewing in its current form other than at its home venue.Located in the Kimmel-Rowan Gallery, the changing exhibit space in the museum's lower level, the exhibit demonstrates visually and graphically how the pseudo-scientific theory of eugenics led to sterilization and murder of German society's weakest members.Planned for five years, the large exhibit is extremely complex.Large amounts of text were necessary to explain the slippery and changing ideas of eugenics, and a full exploration of the exhibit, reading all the text and watching the videos, would probably take over three hours.Project director and exhibit curator Susan Bachrach, who holds a doctorate in modern European history from University of Wisconsin-Madison, selected over 400 artifacts and images, along with survivor testimony for this exhibition.The project directly involved over 100 personnel; another 100 archives, museums and individual donors across Europe, Israel and the United States loaned items for it.Included in the excellent ephemera selected by Bachrach is printed material that is difficult to believe survived the passing decades, such as a poster comparing Jews to the louse that spreads typhus.Like the Museum's larger permanent exhibits, Deadly Medicine is designed to lead one physically along a chronological and serpentine path, so one feels that, ultimately, there is no escape.The exhibit opens with, and maintains a thematic focus on, the "glass man," a visible human model, originally produced by Dresden's Deutsches Hygiene Museum in 1930.For this exhibit, the visible human becomes a symbol both of the Aryan race and medical hubris, although as a teaching model it was firmly within a centuries-old tradition.The brief introduction is followed by an explanation of Germany's World War I population losses, especially of young men, which led to the nationalist idea of rebuilding the "volk" through selective breeding.The exhibit explains that the concept of 246
