Abstract
Een lofzang op integratie Gerard Breeman en Arco Timmermans waren in Montreal voor een conferentie voor politicologen, gespecialiseerd in Europese integratie. ,,Na een driedaagse conferentie over Europese integratie, open sky's verdragen, en immigratievragen bleek dat wij niet meer terug konden!'', schrijven ze per e-mail. ,,Aan de dinertafel hebben we meteen maar Barroso's zorg besproken dat alle lidstaten ook in deze crisis weer hun eigen lijn lijken te gaan trekken. Landen zouden mogelijk de eigen vliegtuigmaatschappijen weer financieel voortrekken. Een crisis kan verbroederen, zoals we hier ervaren, want Duitsers blijken opeens ongeordend, Françaises vriendelijk en Nederlanders beleefd. Maar als het om geld gaat, zoeken nationale politici kennelijk naar weinig Europese integratie. Zonde, want het kan zo leuk en nuttig zijn! Ondertussen willen wij allemaal naar huis. Daarbij zien wij het nut van de 'integratie' van KLM, Air France en Delta Airlines wel in: het geeft ons straks, als het vliegverbod wordt opgeheven, meer mogelijkheden om thuis te komen en meer flexibiliteit. Iedereen hier is het wel eens dat een uitbarsting van nationale sentimenten niet nuttig is. Maar goed, wij wetenschappers zijn bevooroordeeld en hebben veel baat van Europese integratie.''
