Le reseau routier quebecois s'est developpe principalement pendant les annees 60 et 70. Ce reseau est maintenant a maturite. L'augmentation incessante des deplacements et du nombre de vehicules sur les autoroutes et les routes du Quebec a entraine la saturation d'une certaine partie du reseau routier, ce qui a pour consequence de rendre le trafic moins fluide et d'augmenter les retards a certaines intersections et certains echangeurs. Dans le domaine de la gestion du trafic routier le concept de carrefour giratoire, comme solution a ce type de probleme, dans une version plus moderne que l'on peut adapter au milieu. Base sur l'experience de plusieurs administrations routieres et sur un bon nombre d'etudes exhaustives, un guide, intitule Le carrefour giratoire : un mode de gestion different, a ete publie en 2002 par le ministere des Transports du Quebec. Ce guide rassemble tous les renseignements necessaires pour la conception d'un carrefour giratoire. A partir des elements de ce guide, une methode de conception, en dix etapes, a ete elaboree afin d'uniformiser l'etude et la preparation des projets ainsi que l'amenagement des carrefours giratoires sur le territoire quebecois. Ces etapes traitent successivement du choix des principaux criteres de conception, de la determination des elements physiques, de la localisation et de la dimension du carrefour, de la conception des ilots separateurs, de l'evaluation du passage et de la vitesse des vehicules, des distances de visibilite, de l'etude de la capacite et du degre de saturation, du marquage, de la signalisation et de l'eclairage au besoin. ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: The Quebec road system was primarily developed in the 60s and 70s. This system has now reached maturity. The constant increase in trips and the number of vehicles on Quebec roads and highways has led to saturation of part of the road system, reducing traffic flow and increasing delays at certain intersections and interchanges. In the road traffic management field, the roundabout concept has resurfaced as a solution to this type of problem, in a more modern version that can be adapted to the setting. Based on the experience of several road administrations and numerous exhaustive studies, a guide entitled Le carrefour giratoire: un mode de gestion different, was published in 2002 by the Ministere des Transports du Quebec. This guide brings together all the necessary information for designing a roundabout. Based on the elements of this guide, a ten-stage design method has been produced to standardize the study of projects and the preparation and development of roundabouts in Quebec. These stages successively cover the selection of the main design criteria, the determination of the physical features, the location and dimensions of the roundabout, the design of the splitter islands, the estimation of vehicle transit and speed, sight distances, the capacity and saturation study, road markings, traffic control devices, and lighting as needed.
