La mort de Duplessis en 1959 sonne le glas du régime de la « grande noirceur » qu’il avait incarné. Surgit la question redoutable : le Québec peut-il se moderniser sans s’américaniser2 ? À l’aube de la Révolution tranquille, un hiatus se manifeste entre le nouveau « mode de vie » moderne des Canadiens français et les valeurs traditionnelles encore en vigueur. L’étude des idéologies apparaît au programme de Rioux, qui décide d’en retracer la généalogie pour comprendre l’idéologie de rattrapage selon laquelle le Québec doit emboîter le pas aux autres sociétés afin d’entrer dans la modernité – économique, politique et culturelle – surgie de l’industrialisation et de l’urbanisation. Selon Rioux, cette volonté d’être au diapason a pour prix la dépendance du Québec, dépendance qui fait obstacle à l’affermissement de la culture propre à cette société.En sa qualité de sociologue, acquis à la nécessité de la théorie, Rioux s’emploie dans cet article à concevoir la notion d’idéologie sur ce plan théorique. Sur l’élan, il entend l’utiliser pour éclairer les ratés de la société québécoise en matière de vision et de projet de société. Le texte compare les usages respectifs de la notion d’idéologie en anthropologie et en sociologie. Dans les rangs des anthropologues, la notion recouvre ce que désigne « culture » tandis qu’en sociologie elle correspond à une vision étendue à la « structure sociale ». Sur cette base, Rioux en discute la pertinence et la fécondité, notamment pour ses travaux et recherches à venir.
