L'cole a jou un rle essentiel dans l'intgration des lves immigrants la socit canadienne, comme le dmontre Jean-Philippe Croteau dans cet ouvrage. Son tude comparative porte sur quatre commissions scolaires des villes de Montral et de Toronto accueillant les lves de la majorit et ceux de la minorit. Afin de socialiser et d'assimiler ces enfants, les commissions scolaires ont adopt des politiques qui refltaient les valeurs fondamentales de leur collectivit. Dans ce processus, les No-Canadiens ont ngoci, leur faon, leur intgration aux diffrents systmes d'instruction.
