Abstract
Le Rhin est de loin le premier fleuve navigable d’Europe, autant par son accessibilité nautique que par les 300 Mt de fret qui y transitent. A lui seul, il représente aujourd’hui plus de 60% des tonnages acheminés par voie d’eau en Europe. L’axe qu’il constitue dessert de grands centres urbains et industriels qu’il met en relation entre eux et, de plus en plus, avec le reste du monde via sa très puissante façade maritime. L’artificialisation de son cours a été portés par les Etats riverains pour favoriser sa navigabilité. De fait, le contrôle du trafic rhénan a été de longue date l’enjeu de conflits européens pour des raisons autant militaires que commerciales. Mais simultanément, il a aussi été l’objet de coopérations anciennes entre Etats, qui n’ont cessé de s’approfondir. Les divers aménagements du fleuve comme axe de transport, portent aujourd’hui encore les marques de cette fonction de charnière politique. Elle n’a cessé d’inscrire le Rhin dans une dialectique d’appropriation et de partage qui l’éloigne d’une lecture trop simplement linéaire de l’effacement contemporain des frontières internes de l’Europe.
