Ira O. Baker, University of Illinois civil engineering professor, coordinated the 1893 World’s Engineering Congress (July 31-August 5, 1893) at the Chicago World’s Fair (Columbian Exposition). Highlights of the proceedings include unique engineering education papers and the Hydraulic Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by Professor Dwight Porter. On behalf of Division A on Civil Engineering, the ASCE President William Metcalf participated. There were six sessions held with 63 papers presented with 50 papers printed (about 1200 pages). For Civil Engineering-A, there were 318 registrants with average attendance of 125. U.S. water projects presented included deep water from Lake Ontario along the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Atlantic, new sanitary canal and river reversal from Chicago to the Illinois River to the Mississippi River, and the construction of the Nicaragua (Panama) Canal. In 1993, Terry S. Reynolds and Bruce E. Seely of Michigan Technological University presented a Journal of Engineering Education paper on: “Striving for Balance: A Hundred Years of the ASEE.” This included the search for improving classroom instruction and national spokesman for engineering education, including the engineering education deans and administrators. This presentation will feature developments in civil engineering education at the 1893 World’s Engineering Congress. Learning objectives: Identify the history of engineering education that began in 1893. Learn of the civil engineering leaders and projects featured at the 1893 Chicago Engineering Congress. Identify the progress in engineering education in the American Society for Engineering Education.
