Women’s Perceptions of the Term ‘Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder’ for Their Condition

Abstract
Persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD) is characterized by symptoms of physiological sexual arousal (genital vasocongestion, sensitivity) that are described as unwanted, distressing, and sometimes painful. Often women report embarrassment or discomfort disclosing their symptoms to health care providers. In addition, PGAD is not a recognized condition in any diagnostic manual, and has been referred by multiple names including ‘persistent sexual arousal syndrome’ and ‘restless genital syndrome’. The objective of this study was to better understand the thoughts and feelings about persistent genital arousal (PGA) terminology, by women who experience the condition. Women with symptoms of PGA (N=80) were recruited from online support groups, listservs, social media, health care providers, and researchers. Participants completed open-ended questions in an online survey about their perceptions of the name ‘persistent genital arousal disorder’, and whether they feel there would be a better name for the condition. Content analysis was undertaken; themes were identified and coded by two independent raters.
