Ce mémoire est constitué de deux volets dont le premier porte sur l’artiste québécois Fred Pellerin et s’intéresse à l’ethos dans l’actio du conteur, alors que le second consiste en un conte intitulé : « Les Sept Épreuves ». Le premier volet se divise en trois chapitres qui se concentrent exclusivement sur l’art du conteur Fred Pellerin et sa manière de faire revivre des légendes dans un registre familier et rempli d’émotions destiné au grand public. Il s’agit d’exposer sa mise à profit singulière de la tradition orale du folklore québécois et notamment à travers l’évocation pittoresque qu’il fait de son village de Saint-Élie-de-Caxton, une municipalité du Québec située dans la MRC de Maskinongé en Mauricie. L’analyse porte sur les représentations plutôt que sur le texte seul, de manière à rendre compte des stratégies déployées sur scène, et donc de l’actio, en explicitant les principaux motifs éthiques et pathémiques qui visent à faire passer le spectateur du rire aux larmes. Le second volet s’inspire librement des techniques de Fred Pellerin, mais en les appliquant cette fois à la composition plutôt qu’à la représentation. L’enjeu consiste à s’imprégner de son ethos coloré et de ses stratégies langagières pour donner du relief au récit, c’est pourquoi le personnage principal est affublé d’un trouble qui l’amène à parler de manière décalée. L’histoire s’articule autour d’une famille éclatée, et raconte comment le protagoniste part à la recherche de sa mère en compagnie d’un acolyte. On cherchera en vain une adéquation exacte entre la problématique explorée en première partie et l’histoire qui suit, mis à part le fait (et ce n’est pas tout à fait un hasard) qu’il s’agit d’un conte qu’on a voulu émailler d’humour, colorer d’inventions verbales et investir de candeur. Il faut y voir un hommage très libre, davantage qu’une entreprise d’imitation. Chaque conteur doit trouver sa propre voix : voici, en toute humilité, la nôtre.
