Abstract
The Georgia Lake pegmatite field is located in the \nQuetico Gneiss Belt of the Superior Province. \nSpodumene-bearing and subordinate beryl-bearing pegmatites \nof the Georgia Lake area are flanked to the south and east \nby an extensive granitoid terrain, which previously has \nnot been subdivided. Granitoids of the immediate Georgia \nLake area were investigated in conjunction with rare-element \npegmatites to determine the character of the granitoids \nas parental intrusions to rare-element pegmatites. The \ngranitoids include two-mica leucogranites occurring as \na large plutonic mass south of the pegmatite field and \nas smaller satellitic intrusions, the Kilgour Lake Group \ngranitoids centered on a small gabbroic-metagabbroic unit near Kilgour Lake and tonalitic sills dispersed throughout \nthe pegmatite field. The distinction of the three types \nof granitoids was made on the basis of field observations, \npetrography and analytical geochemistry. Two-mica \nleucogranites and tonalitic sills were derived as partial \nmelts of politic metasediments and metagreywacke, \nrespectively. The Kilgour Lake Group granitoids were \npresumed to be the products of fractional crystallization \nof a mafic melt generated in the upper mantle or lower \ncrust. \nMineralogical studies were carried out on perthitic \nmicrocline, tantalite-columbite and Sn oxide minerals from rare-element pegmatites. Results indicate that perthitic \nmicrocline in all pegmatites is of the maximum microcline \nstructural state, tantalite-columbite minerals occur in \na partly to completely disordered structural state and \nthe dominant Sn oxide mineral is staringite. Division of spodumene-bearing rare-element pegmatites \ninto Southern, Central and Northern Groups was made on \nthe basis of internal textural variations, mineralogy and \ndifferences in geochemistry of perthitic microcline and \nmuscovite. The Southern Group consists of one pegmatite \nwhich is unique to the Georgia Lake pegmatite field with \nrespect to development of mineralogical zones and strong \ninternal fractionation of Rb and Cs. Central Group \npegmatites are linked by a fractionation trend, with respect \nto Rb and Cs, across the group. A similar fractionation \ntrend is not observed across the Northern Group pegmatites. \nThe pegmatite groupings reflect different modes of source \nfluid derivation, although all pegmatites of the Georgia Lake area originated as the result of a common anatectic \nevent responsible for the intrusion of two-mica \nleucogranites. Central and Southern Group pegmatites were \nderived from low viscosity fluids differentiated from \ngranitic melts, while Northern Group pegmatites are presumed \nto be the products of fluids generated by direct anatexis \nof metasediments.
