Abstract
The development of Cystidicola cristivomeri in lake \ntrout, Salvelinus namaycush, and C, farionis in rainbow trout, \nSalmo gairdneri, is described. The population biology of \nC. cristivomeri was investigated in lake trout in three lakes \nin northwestern Ontario and in arctic char, S. alpinus, \nGaviafaeces Lake, Northwest Territories. \nYoung lake trout fed selectively on large Mysis \nrelicta which were more frequently infected with C. cristivomeri \n(up to 5.1%) than small mysids. Pontoiporeia affinis was not \na suitable intermediate host in nature and there was no \nevidence that fish paratenic hosts were important in transmitting \nthis nematode to lake trout. \nThird-stage larvae given to lake trout migrated \ndirectly via the pneumatic duct to the swimbladder. In \nexperimentally infected fishes, at 4-10?C, C. cristivomeri were \nmature after 67 (males) and 210 days (females); C. farionis were \nmature after 112 (males) and 235 days (females). There was no \nmeasurable mortality of C. cristivomeri after 600 days in \nexperimentally infected lake trout. \nField studies indicated that most C, cristivomeri \nlive at least 10 years and some probably live longer. The \ndevelopment of female worms to sexual maturity was retarded \nand they grew more slowly when large numbers of C, cristivomeri \nwere present in the swimbladder. Short female worms produced eggs at a slower rate than longer females. This density \ndependent regulation of C, cristivomeri at the infrapopulation \nlevel may result in long-term stability of \nthe nematode suprapopulation in a lake. \nThe number of ulcerative lesions on the inner \nsurface of the swimbladder of lake trout was directly \ndependent upon the number of mature C. cristivomeri \npresent in a fish.
