Si le but poursuivi par l’alphabétisation est un but de libération et d’épanouissement intégral de la personne, il est évident que le simple apprentissage de la lecture et de l’écriture ne suffit pas : il faut que les bénéficiaires de l’alphabétisation deviennent plus conscients des problèmes de la société dans laquelle ils vivent et de la manière de résoudre ces problèmes en prenant eux-mêmes une part active à leur solution. Dans la mesure où l’on perçoit l’alphabétisation comme un geste politique et comme un droit fondamental, il n’est plus possible d’envisager celle-ci du seul point de vue technique et méthodologique : il faut s’interroger sur le contenu qu’elle véhicule. Enseigner à lire et à écrire n’est jamais une entreprise « innocente ». L’article analyse les principales caractéristiques des manuels d’alphabétisation en usage au Canada anglais et l’image d’une réalité statique, unidimensionnelle et individualiste qu’ils renvoient. La société qu’ils décrivent ignore les conflits et sacralise l’autorité. Le Literacy Working Group de Toronto décrit les méthodes et les instruments qu’il s’est donnés pour mettre sur pied un programme d’alphabétisation centré sur les besoins de la communauté, de ses conditions de vie et de travail.
