Abstract
As Israel's Scriptures, first-century Jews, and the New Testament (NT) together recognize, Israel and its salvation are defined by (re-)new(-ed) covenant loyalty. For the Jewish authors of the NT, this relationship has now been fulfilled and redefined in that utterly transforming cosmic event inaugurated in the glorious person of Jesus Christ. Just as some Gentiles were included under the terms of the old covenant, so too mutatis mutandis under the terms of the (re-)new(-ed) covenant though now in astonishing numbers. What have changed are the marks of this reconstituted people: Christ-faith, Christ's teaching, baptism, the reception of the Spirit, and the Lord's “new” covenant meal. Thus, the promises to Abraham and the privileges of his offspring are realized in Jesus and enjoyed by any who through Christ-faith enter into the “new” covenant which itself is the climax and realization of all those previous. The righteousness of God has indeed been revealed from heaven in the gospel of his Son, through whom he has mercy on all, Jew and Gentile alike.
