Abstract
La population francophone, à vrai dire bilingue, ne représente qu’une faible minorité du Manitoba. Elle lutte pour sa survie linguistique depuis plus d’un siècle. Dans ce contexte, chaque communauté, chaque village connaît des évolutions différenciées, pour résister, et développer l’économie locale. Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes est un village comptant environ 600 habitants, situé dans le sud-ouest du Manitoba. Malgré sa taille, il fournit un grand nombre de services à un territoire large mais sous-peuplé. Sa chance est d’être éloigné de Winnipeg, la capitale provinciale. Son dynamisme peut s’expliquer par la capacité d’initiative et de demande sociale, traditionnelle, de ses habitants, mais aussi par la force de leur histoire et de leurs représentations collectives. Ces dernières sont basées, aujourd’hui encore, sur leur culture francophone, leur fournissant une conscience particulière et les mobilisant pour continuer à exister dans l’avenir. Pour autant, malgré les succès institutionnels des vingt dernières années, l’ensemble reste fragile.
