Abstract
Neste artigo, apresentamos uma tradução comentada de um conto da escritora zimbabuense Yvonne Vera, cujas narrativas são reconhecidas pela articulação de temas tabus de sua sociedade por meio de uma prosa densamente poética. O conto focalizado, “A Woman Is a Child”, foi publicado originalmente na coletânea Fiery Spirits: Canadian Writers of African Descent, de 1995. Nele, acompanhamos os detalhes de uma rememoração da personagem Tariro, que propiciam a discussão do caráter sexista da sociedade em questão, flagrado, principalmente, na opressão e no silenciamento das personagens femininas, Tariro e sua mãe, pela personagem masculina, o pai de Tariro. Para a tradução, procuramos perceber como a temática discutida na trama foi articulada na textualidade do conto para embasar nossas opções tradutórias, selecionando os elementos que considerávamos mais significativos para serem privilegiados na tradução e outros, menos significativos, para serem adaptados.
