Pratique relativement recente, le soin par le contact animalier connait, dans le monde occidental, un developpement important. Qu'on les nomme Pet Therapy , Zootherapie , Animal Assisted Therapy ou encore Mediation Animale , ces pratiques ont en commun de mettre en relation des animaux (chiens, chats, chevaux, - plus rarement - dauphins) et des humains en situation de souffrance psychologique et/ou physique. Cette mise en relation, qui peut etre aussi bien verbale que corporelle, a pour objectif de produire chez ces personnes des effets benefiques. Elles ont egalement en commun de poser a celles et ceux qui s'y interessent un certain nombre de questions a la fois sur la realite de ces effets (comment les mesurer ?), sur leur qualification ( Therapeutique ? Recreationnel ? Accompagnement ?), et sur le role de l'animal dans leur production (Est-il actif ? Son influence est-elle directe ou indirecte ?). Toutes les personnes impliquees dans le soin par le contact animalier sont travaillees par ces interrogations. D'autant plus qu'elles peuvent difficilement se reposer sur un savoir scientifique peinant a expliquer les mecanismes de cette relation. En effet, l'interaction avec l'animal a but therapeutique a donne lieu a de nombreuses recherches au cours des dernieres decennies, qui n'ont pas reussi a produire des savoirs stabilises. Sans doute parce cet objet hybride met radicalement a l'epreuve certaines conception du faire science. En partant d'experiences concretes (observees ou rapportees), il sera question de voir comment les acteurs rendent compte de la complexite de la relation qui s'etablit entre un animal, un therapeute et un patient et produisent ainsi un discours inedit sur l'animal. Un discours qui, entre l'animal placebo ( le dispositif fait tout ) et l'animal magique ( l'animal fait tout ), refuse de choisir son camp.
