Faire appel aux pensées des sujets pour mieux comprendre un phénomène est une pratique courante en didactique, où la question des processus d’apprentissage est centrale, car les verbalisations issues de protocoles verbaux (think-aloud protocols) foisonnent d’informations d’une richesse inégalable. Il demeure cependant légitime de s’interroger sur les pratiques des chercheurs qui ont recours aux protocoles verbaux avec des élèves, étant donné le contexte particulier entourant ces participants. Le but du présent article est de faire une revue de la littérature sur la question des défis inhérents aux protocoles verbaux. L’exposé s’articulera autour des questions de véridicité et de complétude des verbalisations, en insistant sur la nature des problèmes particuliers pouvant être rencontrés en contexte scolaire. Des pistes méthodologiques seront ensuite proposées pour guider les chercheurs souhaitant surmonter ces défis et ainsi obtenir des données valides pour faire avancer les connaissances en lien avec l’enseignement et l’apprentissage de processus cognitifs particuliers.
