À partir de l’exemple des fichiers et inventaires qui existent à propos des initiatives, expériences, associations de défense du cadre de vie, et qui se réclament d’une sociologie participative, l’auteur met en évidence ce qui sépare une telle démarche d’une recherche sociologique. Celle-ci cherche à établir les invariants structurels, les constantes de fonctionnement de toutes ces expériences. Ce sont là des questions indépendantes de la pratique sociale et dont la réponse est sans utilité immédiate pour les praticiens. À propos de telles expériences, il faudrait par exemple se demander : La recherche-action ou la sociologie participante n’empêchent-elles pas la distanciation nécessaire par rapport aux phénomènes observés, ne contribuent-elles pas à nier ou à contourner les ambiguïtés de la pratique sociale ?
