La prévention est un malentendu... Il existe plusieurs clefs pour éprouver celui-ci : d’abord, il n’y a de communication que dans le malentendu et le travail social est inscrit totalement dans cette dimension; ensuite, le malentendu que génère la prévention sanitaire quant à la distinction entre logique des soins et logique préventive est incontournable. Ces deux clefs permettent de mettre en perspective le problème de la prévention sociale en prenant comme exemple la genèse et la logique institutionnelle des clubs de prévention en France. Trois pistes sont alors successivement envisagées : les contradictions de la prévention qui en font une entreprise impossible, ou au moins interminable; une interrogation sur le sens de cette entreprise marquée d’un tel sceau; enfin, reprenant l’interrogation de Michel Foucault sur la prison, l’auteur se demande à quoi peut bien servir l’échec de la prévention. À travers ses multiples discours sur l’anormalité et l’inadaptation, la prévention se révèle être inefficace pour ceux à qui elle s’adresse mais terriblement efficace pour les autres puisqu’elle délivre à l’ensemble du corps social un message inversé sur la normalité. Là, la prévention excelle : elle n’échoue pas à prévenir l’inadaptation, elle réussit au contraire à la produire comme ensemble de significations légitimes sur des comportements stigmatisés.
