En Tabasco, en el sureste de Mexico, en la produccion de este fruto hasta elano 2003, participaban 847 productores; en 2005, solo llegaron a ser 199. La reduc-cion de la produccion de papaya ha sido principalmente por virosis y por problemasde comercializacion. Anteriormente, hace un ano, a nivel nacional Tabasco tenia unagran presencia en las principales centrales de abasto del pais, principalmente en el D.F.En los mercados internacionales, Tabasco, en el 2004, exporto $88,947,660 millonesde dolares de papaya Maradol, cultivados mediante el sistema convencional, condestino del 94% a EE.UU; y el resto, el 16%, a Belgica, Espana, Francia, Canada, Alema-nia, Japon e Inglaterra. El consumo de productos organicos en la Union Europea hacrecido a una tasa promedio del 25% en los ultimos 10 anos. El presente estudio serealizo a una muestra deter minada de 67 productores de papaya en el estado. Losprincipales problemas a los que se enfrentan los productores son por plagas y enfer-medades (39.68%), por la falta de recursos (22.22%) y por el clima (60% sequias,27% inundaciones). Las plagas y enfermedades en orden de impor tancia son: acarorojo (arana roja), virosis (VMPD) y acaro blanco. Acerca del tiempo que han aplicadotratamientos quimicos en sus cultivos, el 68% menciono que es de 5 anos o mas. Esimpor tante realzar que el empleo de estas tecnologias debe realizarse de maneraplanificada y mediante la capacitacion y la asesoria tecnica necesarias, por lo que serequiere de mas especialistas en esta area de agricultura sustentable
