Abstract
The editors of The Wounded Brain Healed: The Golden Age of the Montreal Neurological Institute, 1934–1984 have compiled an interesting collection of essays examining the intellectual and institutional history of Canada’s preeminent institution for neurology and neurosurgery. In myriad ways the contributors to this richly illustrated volume seek to assess both the internal history of the institute and its local, national and global reach. Such a volume would of necessity dwell on the personalities of leading figures in the institution, and unsurprisingly neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield, the founder of the Institute, is given a large amount of attention (as are other Directors). There is also substantial attention paid to emerging areas of research in the post-1960s, including neurochemistry, neuropsychology, neurogenetics and multiple sclerosis. The volume is also a collective biography. It is peppered with short biographies of students, scientists, academics and administrators, men and women. Most notable among these are passages focused on neuropsychologist Brenda Milner and her famous patient, H. M. (Henry Molaison). Lesser-known patients also feature in the volume, including P. B. and F. C., both patients who had deep brain resective surgeries that removed mesial temporal structures near the hippocampus. These cuts, along with the case of H. M., resulted, as the authors observe, in a discovery that came close to ‘the seat of memory, or at least one of its haunts’ (p. 289). While a passage like that above does communicate something of the tone of the volume, there are in truth few sources that provide so clear a picture on this important institution’s history.
