Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Abstract: The current text retraces, in the light of the international context, the québécois path in terms of integration and management of diversity. Highlighting the different tendencies that marked the evolution of the politics and initiatives of the State of Quebec since the mid 1960’, Alain-G. Gagnon and François Boucher reconsiders the main foundations of an approach whose mainly focus is to ensure the participation of all in a francophone and plural society. The implementation of this program is placed, initially, in the larger context of the deployment of pluralists regimes in the liberal democracies and, later, in the blacklash against the recognition of the cultural and religious pluralism that those societies registered in the early 2000’. The authors present, then, the major phases of the development of the Quebec model on the management of diversity, from the redefinition of the majority sharing a French-Canadian heritage as a pillar of a francophone host society, up to the progressive formulation of a framework deliberately civilian of cohabitation. Avoiding until now the pitfalls of a return to the policies of assimilation, as we can see in some European societies, this framework will be more promising if it will be able to continue to invest in the inclusion, the struggle against discrimination and solid exchanges between citizens from different backgrounds. Thereby, the development of a Québécois approach to integration must focus nowadays in enhance the practices favouring the dialog between different components of Quebec’s society, the pursuit social justice and the quest of a greater citizenship equality. Keywords: Québec. Ethnocultural diversity. Secularism. Interculturalism. Immigration.
