Processed genes are functional genes that are generated as a result of retrotransposition of mRNA molecules into loci where recruited or pre-existing promoter elements support their transcription. Here, we investigate the fate of previously identified Arabidopsis thaliana processed genes. We found that six A. thaliana processed genes originated in the common ancestor of five Brassicaceae species. Ka/Ks analysis of these processed genes, and of their parental genes, show that they experienced similar selective pressures. Furthermore, the expression of processed genes is not correlated to the presence of CAATT and TATA-boxes, or nearby genes. Most of these processed genes are likely to have gained expression through recruitment of novel promoter sequences. However, the selective pressure acting on their expression level has not yet been adapted.
