Part of a series devoted to Six Plenums of CPSU Central Committee after Stalin, it is an admirable collaborative effort on part of International Fund Demokratiia' (Russia) and Hoover Institute (USA).The volume is an extremely valuable contribution to study of Soviet Union and Russia. The publication of previously unpublished and unabridged archival materials offers exceptional insights into power crisis that shook CPSU Central Committee as well as methods with which it was handled.The description of events that led to july 1957 plenum, as well as proceedings of plenum itself, makes fascinating reading. On 18 june 1957, scheduled meeting of Presidium of Soviet of Ministers turned into an unexpected attack against first secretary of Communist party, N.S. Khrushchev. G.M. Malenkov and his group accused Khrushchev of a lack of collegiality, rudeness, and intolerance towards other members of Central Committee. But real reason for attack was threat to group posed by Khrushchev's promotion of his own cadres within party apparatus. V.M. Molotov, LM. Kaganovich, G.M. Malenkov, as well as four other members, voted to remove Khrushchev from power.Khrushchev, with assistance of MGB, came up with an unprecedented solution: Khrushchev's supporters from republics and regional party committees were urgently transported to Moscow by military aircraft. Their arrival resulted in Plenum of CPSU Central Committee that lasted from 22 to 29 june 1957 and signified a key step in political struggle with CPSU Central Committee and ultimate victory of Khrushchev over opposition.To general public, plenum was presented as a schism between major party line defended by Khrushchev and conspirators Malenkov, Molotov, and Kaganovich, who were slowing down de-Stalinization as well as rehabilitation of Stalinist victims after XX Congress of Communist Party. The documents of Plenum show that the old guard sabotaged these processes not because they had been directly implicated as eager and willing abettors of old order, but because of their personal loss of power, status, and economic benefits that accompanied new reforms. …
