La población de los antiguos mayas se ha estimado tradicionalmente al multiplicar el número de montones de casas descubiertas y el número asumido de personas por hogar en un transecto dado de un sitio de excavación arqueológica. Este enfoque es fundamentalmente débil ya que ambos parámetros clave están sujetos a grandes variaciones a lo largo del tiempo de varios siglos. El resultado omnipresente de este enfoque es que los antiguos mayas son casi siempre interpretados para tener una base muy poblacional, especialmente durante el Período Clásico. Lo que se omite en estudios previos es la demostración de sostenibilidad de tal tamaño de población calculado en comensuración con, entre otras cosas, el manejo efectivo de desechos humanos. La situación de disposición de residuos en la antigua Tikal se agrava por el terreno generalmente plano y la falta de canales de drenaje naturales. Los únicos medios de eliminación de desechos habrían sido los trabajadores manuales que transportaran los desechos que se recolectan diariamente para verterlos en fosas sépticas a cierta distancia de los asentamientos humanos de alta densidad. Hubo una notable ausencia de animales de tiro y máquinas de ruedas, incluidos los vehículos de transporte, lo que podría haber facilitado tales medios de eliminación de desechos. La cuestión problemática de la gestión de los residuos humanos ciertamente habría limitado el tamaño práctico del grupo de población en la antigua Tikal.
