Abstract
Respiratory medicine at the University of British Columbia has a long and proud history of clinical care, education and research. The clinical care followed a distributed model involving multiple sites with focused special expertise at different sites. There were major reorganizations over the years and most acute care and research are now concentrated at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and St. Paul's Hospital. This article outlines the development and progress of respiratory sciences at VGH and includes the merger with the UBC Hospital and closure of Shaughnessy Hospital in 1994. The major areas of clinical and research expertise are asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, sleep apnea, occupational lung disease, tuberculosis, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension lung transplantation, chest radiology and thoracic surgery. More recently multiple programs have been integrated into the UBC Centre for Lung Health (www.centreforlunghealth.ca). The UBC Centre for Lung Health provided a framework for the collaborations and interaction that have led to the development of the Institute for Heart and Lung Health (http://heartandlung.ca/).
