Abstract
Dans Ghost in the Shell, Masamune Shirow a visé à médiatiser la notion de holons en poursuivant le raisonnement d’Arthur Koestler afin de l’appliquer à l’informatique. De même que l’esprit est une phase du corps biologique, une forme d’intelligence peut se former dans l’océan de données du réseau mondial de communication. Mais en utilisant le support de la fiction en bande dessinée, son message a été profondément modifié. Art de l’ellipse où le lecteur comble l’univers diégétique entre les espaces vides des cases, le manga tel qu’il se pratique dans l’écosystème des médias japonais se prête mal à l’abstraction. En analysant les différents dispositifs mis en place pour s’assurer de la bonne transmission de l’information, il s’agit de montrer comment il est possible de représenter un élément technologique qui échappe aux sens humains. Le mangaka double ainsi la fiction d’un métatexte qui l’interrompt constamment et il tente de faire passer son message graphiquement en utilisant des abstractions ou des figures faisant référence à la religion. Ce qui figure en marge étant perçu comme marginal, la plupart des lecteurs ont privilégié les enquêtes musclées de la section 9 aux commentaires philosophiques. Les nombreuses adaptations de Ghost in the Shell dans l’environnement du media mix soulignent l’échec partiel du projet initial de Shirow, chaque créateur donnant sa version du monde diégétique élaborant ainsi des univers parallèles incompatibles mais dotés d’une même tendance à la référence intermédiatique quitte à inventer une œuvre à citer.
