Abstract
Dans le cadre de la réflexion sur une littérature dite « moyenne », la présente étude revient sur la situation singulière faite à partir de 1880 à l’œuvre romanesque et théâtrale de Georges Ohnet en examinant l’accueil qu’elle a reçu de ses contemporains. Rejeté pour indignité esthétique par les écrivains auxquels il prétendait s’égaler, il n’était pas pour autant confondu avec les romanciers populaires dont il ne pratiquait pas les recettes. Source de vives jalousies, son immense succès commercial (Le Maître de forges, paru en 1882, a connu 250 éditions) s’est accompagné de la part de la critique d’éreintements quasi unanimes et d’une cruauté rare. Ni artiste ni soutier du roman-feuilleton, cet écrivain aujourd’hui oublié a été relégué dans une sorte d’entre-deux, de no man’s land littéraire auquel l’histoire de la littérature n’a pas donné de nom. Faut-il voir en lui un représentant d’une littérature qu’on ne dit pas moyenne ?
