Abstract
The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing. Dietary factors such as the spread of the “western” diet, high in fat and protein but low in fruits and vegetables, may be associated with the rising incidence of IBD. A large number of studies have evaluated the association between diet and IBD risk; however, there is no systematic review of this important topic. We performed a systematic review using guideline recommend methodology to evaluate the association of pre-illness intake of fats, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, meats and protein intake and the risk of subsequent IBD diagnosis. Two investigators independently identified eligible fully published studies through structured keyword searches in PubMed, Google Scholar, and manual searches. No language restrictions were imposed. A total of nineteen studies were included encompassing 2,609 patients with IBD (1,269 Crohn's disease (CD) and 1,340 ulcerative colitis (UC) patients); only one was a cohort study and the other 18 studies were case-control. Twelve studies were performed in Europe, three in Japan, two in Canada, one in Israel, and 1 cross-continental study included the US, Canada, and several European countries.
