L’interet suscite par le concept d’emotion chez les Grecs a ouvert une voie d’interpretation nouvelle en histoire de la psychologie. D. Konstan a montre en particulier, dans The Emotions of the Ancient Greeks (Toronto, 2006), qu’en accordant a certaines emotions une valeur cognitive, on relativise les lectures qui privilegient une dichotomie entre l’exercice de la pensee rationnelle et la dimension affective, non-rationnelle, de la vie psychique. Il reste cependant a montrer comment notre notion moderne d’emotion ou de sentiment parvient a rendre compte de la maniere dont les Grecs decrivaient certaines affections. Il faut donc retracer l’histoire de la notion de « sentiment », d’Homere a ses premiers « theoriciens », a savoir Platon et Aristote, dont la typologie des emotions dans la Rhetorique constitue souvent un point de depart interpretatif, et non un point d’arrivee. R. Zaborowski, qui s’etait interesse a certaines affections particulieres chez Homere (La Crainte et le courage dans l’Iliade et l’Odyssee, Varsovie, 2002) presente un ouvrage synthetique sur les presocratiques dont le pari est double. Premierement, il s’agit de montrer quel role ont joue les presocratiques dans l’histoire de la notion de sentiment ou d’affectivite en general. En effet, l’auteur rappelle des le debut de son ouvrage que certains fragments constituent une veritable avancee dans la constitution d’une psychologie, articulee a une anthropologie. Deuxiemement, Z. entend montrer que le presuppose evolutionniste, qui consiste a lire ces fragments comme des signes d’une dissociation progressive entre la raison et les « passions » n’est pas justifie. Le but de cet ouvrage consiste a articuler, selon un modele appele « integral » et « hierarchique », differents niveaux du « sentiment ».
