Cet article 3 aborde les questionnements et préoccupations des chefs de service des établissements sociaux et médico-sociaux en cherchant à leur proposer une interprétation sociologique à la lumière du croisement de deux théories : l’action située et l’analyse stratégique et systémique. Ainsi les questionnements du positionnement et de la posture ou du style de management sont-ils analysés en les replaçant dans les contextes organisationnels singuliers au sein desquels ils émergent. Une telle analyse a pour conséquence une relativisation et une réinterprétation du discours managérial dominant sur les pratiques que devraient adopter les chefs de service. L’article s’appuie sur les résultats d’une enquête statistique réalisée en 2012 auprès d’un échantillon significatif de chefs de service (232). L’article montrera que : les discours tenus par les chefs de service sur leur positionnement sont des contructions contingentes qui prennent sens au sein de configurations organisationnelles et de trajectoires singulières ; les pratiques concrètes qu’ils adoptent pour « manager » leur(s) équipe(s) comportent une dimension stratégique et doivent être considérées comme des logiques d’action.
