Prevalencia de enfermedades periodontales en pacientes con enfermedad crónica del riñón: una revisión sistemática

Introduccion: Las enfermedades periodontales son un grupo de enfermedades inflamatorias que afectan los tejidos de soporte del diente. Frecuentemente afectan a pacientes con enfermedad cronica del rinon (ECR). Hasta el momento no se encontraron revisiones sistematicas actualizadas, en espanol relacionadas a este tema, sin embargo, existen numerosos estudios publicados, es por ello que el objetivo fue determinar la prevalencia de enfermedades periodontales en pacientes con ECR. Metodologia: las fuentes de informacion consultadas fueron: Medline a traves de PubMed, Springer, Hindawi, Biomedcentral, PLOSone, Medigraphic, Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS), Google Academico y Scielo. Resultados: Se encontraron un total de 60 estudios donde predominan revisiones sistematicas, estudios transversales, estudios de cohortes y estudios de casos y controles. El numero de pacientes incluidos fue 180.597 en un rango de edad comprendido entre los 5 y los 80 anos, sin distincion de sexo. La evidencia refleja que la prevalencia de gingivitis en paises como Arabia Saudita, Brasil, Canada, Tailandia e Israel es elevada (±50%), en cambio, la periodontitis resulto prevalente en un 50% o mas en paises como Rumania, India, Portugal, Bulgaria, Brasil, Taiwan, Mexico y Espana. Los estudios analizados demostraron una prevalencia de gingivitis de 50% o mas desde el 2002 hasta el 2009, por otro lado, la periodontitis resulto prevalente en ±50% sobre todo desde el ano 2005 hasta el 2010. Conclusiones: Se hace necesaria la potenciacion de programas que promuevan la higiene bucal ademas de una visita mas frecuente al odontologo, especialmente orientados a pacientes con enfermedad cronica del rinon.
