Thomas Niger de Split et son épigramme antiluthérienne : destin d’une pasquinade

Abstract
Le Dalmate Thomas Niger de Split (vers 1450-vers 1532), évêque de Skradin puis de Trogir, s’illustra principalement par son activité diplomatique au service de la Croatie menacée par les Ottomans. Il parcourut l’Europe pour avertir les papes et les princes du péril et leur demander du secours. De décembre 1522 à mars 1523, Niger séjourne à la cour du roi de Pologne en qualité de nonce apostolique. Il communique alors à l’évêque Andrzej Krzycki une épigramme commençant par Dic rogo Leo Papa faciat quid hypocrita præstans , et qui dénonce la passivité de Léon X et de trois cardinaux moines envers Luther. Or Léon X est mort en décembre 1521 après avoir excommunié Luther : l’anachronisme de l’épigramme invite à s’interroger sur sa genèse. Cette étude propose une piste de réflexion, la pasquinade italienne Leon, che fa lo hyppocrita prestante . Celle-ci fut probablement composée en 1520 et est très semblable à l’épigramme de Niger. Une comparaison entre ces deux documents permet d’émettre l’hypothèse que Thomas Niger a connu la pasquinade puis l’a traduite en latin pour la transmettre à Krzycki, en ayant omis les passages trop accablants pour la cour de Rome.
