Au carrefour du lisible et du visibleEkphrasis et mise en abyme dans Les Gommes et La Jalousie dans un des premiers articles critiques consacrés à l'écriture de Robbe-Grillet, Roland Barthes constate la « promotion du visuel » chez l'auteur des Gommes 1 .Barthes soutient que la description de l'objet chez Robbe-Grillet se limite presque toujours à des qualités visuelles, cette stratégie empêchant la « "cénesthésie" » typique de la sensibilité romanesque, et qui vise à créer des correspondances affectives avec l'objet.L'écriture robbe-grilletienne ferait donc preuve d'un « recours tyrannique à la vue » 2 .Barthes emploie une analogie avec la peinture pour cibler la différence entre la description romanesque traditionnelle et celle qu'on trouve chez Robbe-Grillet.Tandis que la description littéraire ressemble le plus souvent à la « nature morte hollandaise où la minutie des détails est entièrement subjuguée par une qualité dominante qui transforme tous les matériaux de la vision en une sensation unique, d'ordre viscéral », chez Robbe-Grillet la description « s'apparente au contraire à la peinture moderne » car elle propose « une lecture simultanée des plan figuratifs » et cherche à « restituer à l'objet "sa maigreur essentielle" » 3 .À la suite de Barthes, de nombreux critiques ont analysé l'oeuvre de Robbe-Grillet par rapport à la peinture moderne 4 , soulignant ainsi l'importance de cette approche « visuelle » de son oeuvre.
