Dans cet article, nous montrons que l’entreprise théorique menée notamment par des auteurs comme Orléan et Aglietta (2002), et qui soulignent avec justesse les manquements de l’orthodoxie, se heurte à des difficultés analogues. Celles-ci proviennent essentiellement de ce que la théorie exclut la production. N’étant pas saisis dans leur formation, les produits sont recouverts « après coup » par une monnaie qui ne fait qu’en rendre possible la circulation marchande. La monnaie n’apparaît plus alors que comme un instrument de répartition et non comme une unité de mesure. C’est alors que le passage du subjectif à l’objectif ne peut être expliqué. L’opération qui concentre l’essentiel de ces difficultés est le paiement. À travers lui, il apparaît que le monétaire et le « réel » doivent être tenus ensemble, ils sont les deux aspects du même objet économique qu’est le produit (Schmitt, 1984). Nous montrons qu’un appareil conceptuel qui envisage valeur et monnaie comme des processus qui s’engendrent réciproquement, et non comme des créations, reste prisonnière de la dichotomie dont il promet pourtant le dépassement.
