À la fin du 19e siècle, la presse d'information apparaît peu à peu au Québec, forçant ainsi les propriétaires et rédacteurs de journaux d'opinion à modifier leur pratique journalistique. Ces transformations sont initiées par de grands quotidiens urbains comme La Presse et le Star qui concurrencent de plus en plus les journaux régionaux. Ce mémoire vise à étudier la presse régionale durant cette période caractérisée par le développement de la presse d'information à grand tirage, soit de 1888 à 1930. Comme les régions et leurs hebdomadaires ont des caractéristiques et une évolution propres, une étude comparative entre Le Progrès du Saguenay (Chicoutimi) et Le Courrier de St-Hyacinthe (Saint-Hyacinthe) a permis de comprendre comment deux hebdomadaires de deux régions distinctes ont réagi face au développement du journalisme d'information. Dans ce travail nous proposons d'étudier la région et les rédacteurs/propriétaires des hebdomadaires afin de mieux comprendre l'évolution de la mise en page et du contenu rédactionnel. De cette vue d'ensemble de la pratique journalistique, il ressort que chaque hebdomadaire à l'étude réagit différemment au nouveau modèle de journalisme qui s'implante au Québec. Nous découvrons ainsi que Le Courrier de St-Hyacinthe subit plus rapidement la concurrence des grands quotidiens montréalais et qu'il se définit, dès le début du 20e siècle, comme un journal en complète opposition avec ce nouveau type de journalisme. Du côté de Chicoutimi, Le Progrès du Saguenay tend à s'inspirer davantage des grands quotidiens urbains et entame, très tôt, une transition vers le journal d'information. \n______________________________________________________________________________ \nMOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : Journalisme, Presse régionale, Chicoutimi, Saint-Hyacinthe, 19eS, 20eS
