Re-conceptualizing Resistance: Student Curation of an Urban Art Gallery

Abstract
This presentation centres student voice in examining the curation of an art gallery in order to examine student resistance. Drawing from two years of ethnographic fieldwork in a urban arts high school in Montreal, this presentation examines the concept of resistance in relation to hip-hop based education and student engagement. Using the frameworks of culturally responsive pedagogy and youth resistance, the authors argue that a closer look at youth curation of an urban arts gallery leads us to broader implications of that resistance beyond the space of the gallery. Contextualizing their work within the realm of hip-hop based education, this presentation offers an important expansion on traditional hip-hop based pedagogy through a focus on the visual arts and student curation, rather than music creation or rap lyricism. The authors argue for a reconsideration of the contrast between resistance and student engagement through looking at student resistance as a form of engagement. This is achieved in part through a focus on student voice, and analysis of student perspectives on their own resistance. The authors propose new ways of mobilizing resistance into student-led activism through the visual arts grounded in arts based research and curriculum.
