Les propositions sur la théorie de la muséologie des années 1970 et 1980, notamment celles identifiées comme appartenant aux pays de l’Est avant 1989, regagnent un certain intérêt. L’appellation muséologie de l’Est est entrée dans le Dictionnaire encyclopédique de muséologie en 2011 pour définir une compréhension spécifique de la muséologie théorique. Comment cette appellation est-elle construite ? À quelle réalité réfère-t-elle? En effet, la muséologie de l’Est englobe des réalités historiques, géographiques et culturelles diverses. Par ailleurs, il ne s’agit pas d’un bloc homogène ; les écrits dévoilent une diversité des approches et des perspectives, parfois opposées. Cet article interroge ces diverses propositions pour retracer par la suite quelques éléments de la circulation des idées. Comment les théories développées au sein de l’Europe centrale et de l’Est avant les années 1990 ont-elles trouvé leur écho dans la muséologie contemporaine internationale, au point où on peut même en relater les ramifications transatlantiques, notamment au Québec ? Enfin, l’étude de divers courants de pensée et de leurs interprétations permet de mieux comprendre la circulation des savoirs, des idées et de certains développements au sein de la muséologie.
