Abstract
L’histoire de la lecture dans les bibliothèques reste encore un domaine mal connu. Cette lacune peut-elle, pour les grandes bibliothèques parisiennes au XIX e siècle, être comblée par l’exploitation systématique des registres de prêts de livres à l’extérieur ? Ils n’ont jusqu’ici été utilisés que pour des recherches consacrées à de grands écrivains. Leur consultation en est parfois difficile car ils ont été inégalement et souvent médiocrement tenus. L’article, en prenant l’exemple de la Bibliothèque nationale, s’attache à démontrer que malgré les critiques incessantes dont elle a été l’objet, cette pratique était loin d’être quantitativement négligeable (plusieurs milliers de prêts par an) jusqu’aux grandes réformes du Second Empire. Son étude peut donc apporter un éclairage nouveau sur les emprunteurs (origine géographique, statut social, activité scientifique) et leurs lectures.
