Les analyses du marché foncier consacrées aux sociétés rurales européennes de la fin du Moyen âge et de l’époque moderne sont amenées à s’intéresser particulièrement à l’articulation entre ces transferts et les relations de parenté qui peuvent exister entre les acteurs de l’échange. Il sera suggéré ici qu’une meilleure compréhension de ces problèmes passe par une reformulation des termes mêmes dans lesquels la question est généralement posée. Dans la mesure où les relations de parenté ne tiennent pas partout la même place et sont utilisées selon des voies spécifiques dans les différentes sociétés rurales — notamment en rapport avec la variété des pratiques d’héritage et des modes de reproduction sociale — , l’étude de leur interférence avec le marché foncier nécessite elle-même une analyse plurielle. Cela concerne aussi bien les circonstances qui donnent lieu à de tels transferts, que le problème de la formation du prix de la terre en pareil cas. Tout en tenant compte de l’infinie variété des situations locales, deux « modèles » opposés peuvent être mis en lumière à cet égard. Chacun d’eux représente une réponse particulière au problème du prix des transactions foncières, et traduit des modalités spécifiques des relations entre parents, tant entre collatéraux qu’entre ascendants et descendants, au sujet de la terre.
