Abstract
Indoor Air 2005, the 10th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Climate, was convened from September 4 to 9, 2005 in Beijing, China. Its objective was to promote, in academia, industries, organizations, and governments, progress and expansion of knowledge of indoor air sciences and technologies for the purpose of advancing our life quality. The conference provided opportunities to exchange new ideas on indoor air sciences, to hear the state-of-the-art technologies, to identify solutions for problems related to indoor air, such as energy, environment and diseases, and to build partnerships within and between sciences such as engineering, medicine, chemistry, microbiology and architecture. It was the first time that such kind of conference was held in a developing country. The previous meetings in the series were held in Copenhagen, Denmark (1978), Amherst (MA), USA (1981), Stockholm, Sweden (1984), Berlin, West Germany (1987), Toronto, Canada (1990), Helsinki, Finland (1993), Nagoya, Japan (1996), Edinburgh, Scotland (1999) and Monterey (CA), USA (2002). Indoor Air 2005 attracted 930 participants from nearly 50 countries with 967 presentations. The technical program categorized the meeting theme into five topics: Indoor Environment Pollutants and Pollution Sources Pollutant Distributions Contaminant Control Health Effects This issue of Indoor Air journal selected a few significantly expanded papers from Indoor Air 2005, which are related to indoor air quality, thermal comfort, contaminant transport, odor/VOC in buildings, and health effects. What we selected are a few representatives from a large number of great articles from the conference. We hope that the readers could be attracted to the rich contents of those articles and can find more from the proceedings of Indoor Air 2005 conference. The special issue will not be possible without the efforts from the authors. We would like to thank the peer reviewers who provided valuable comments and suggestions for these papers. Finally, we would like to thank the Editor-in-Chief of Indoor Air journal, Professor Jan Sundell, for his encouragement and assistance in putting together this special issue.
