Abstract
Resume: Selon l'auteur, l'ouvrage de Northrop Frye, The Educated Imagination , permet d'etudier l'influence persistante et paradoxale de l'ideologie imperialiste sur l'enseignement de la litterature. A la lumiere de travaux d'etudiants du secondaire, il examine differents themes caracteristiques de l'imperialisme, tels ceux des iles desertes, de l'identite de l'Autre, de la place du Canada, etc. afin de montrer a quel point la distinction Est-Ouest et le clivage entre la civilisation et le monde primitif perdurent et fiissent par definir cet apprentissage de la litterature meme si les etudiants eux-memes rejettent l'imperialisme. Summary: This paper argues that Northrop Frye's book, The Educated Imagination , provides the means of examining the lingering influence of imperialism on the way we teach literature to the young. Using instances drawn from the responses to the book by high school students, the paper reviews the themes which Frye develops of uninhabited islands, being outside and other, the place of Canada, and the work of literature to show how the divide between West and East, civilized and primitive, continues to define the critical work of this discipline, even as they are taken up and resisted by students using Frye's vision of the educated imagination.
