0286 Actigraphic Sleep Parameters In Younger And Older Adults

Abstract
The National Sleep Foundation recent sleep recommendations differentiated between younger adults(18–25 years) and older adults (26–64 years) but recommended the same amount of sleep, 7–9 hours, to both groups. Previous studies examining adults sleep patterns have lumped young and old adults. It is therefore not clear whether the sleep patterns of younger and older adults are similar or different. Hence, the objective of the present study was to examine age and sex differences in sleep duration and schedule between younger and older adults. 195 young adults, 18 to 25, and 69 adults, 30 to 34, had their sleep measured by actigraphy for 6 nights. Sleep parameters examined were means and night-to-night variability of bed time, sleep start, sleep end, time in bed, assumed and true sleep duration. Older adults’ sleep started earlier and their sleep schedules were more consistent compared to younger adults. In addition, gender differences were found in both age group such that men had delayed sleep schedules, shorter sleep duration, greater variability in sleep end times, and were more likely to have less than the recommended amount of sleep compared to women. Age differences were found between younger and older adults, such that younger adults have later and more variable night-to-night sleep schedule when compared to older adults. However, sleep duration per se was not different, hence supporting NSF guidelines for these age groups. Gender differences were found such that men’s sleep is shorter and more varied from night-to-night when compared to women’s sleep. Men are therefore a population at higher risk of insufficient sleep and may benefit from sleep health education.
