Abstract
Ce chapitre a pour objectif de tisser un dialogue entre la sociologie de l’espace de Jean Remy et une enquête de terrain menée à Montréal. Cette enquête portait sur la cohabitation interethnique dans quatre quartiers de classes moyennes ayant connu une transformation rapide de leurs populations, avec, entre autres, l’arrivée massive de nouveaux immigrants. Le dialogue se noue ainsi autour de la question de la ville cosmopolite, de son organisation spatiale et de la manière dont les différents groupes y coexistent – un thème souvent abordé par Remy dans ses travaux, qu’ils portent sur la morphologie urbaine, les régimes de distance-proximité ou les parcours résidentiels des immigrants. Les propositions analytiques formulées par Remy sur ces différents thèmes seront mobilisées pour montrer l’intérêt d’abandonner une vision surplombante de l’intégration conduisant soit à un quartier homogène car habité par une seule population, soit à un espace dans lequel se retrouveraient toutes les composantes de la société urbaine. Dans une approche pragmatiste au contraire, le quartier se voit plutôt attribuer des significations multiples qui émergent des interactions qui y prennent place.
