Abstract
Ce chapitre a pour objectif de tisser un dialogue entre la sociologie de l’espace de Jean Remy et une enquete de terrain menee a Montreal. Cette enquete portait sur la cohabitation interethnique dans quatre quartiers de classes moyennes ayant connu une transformation rapide de leurs populations, avec, entre autres, l’arrivee massive de nouveaux immigrants. Le dialogue se noue ainsi autour de la question de la ville cosmopolite, de son organisation spatiale et de la maniere dont les differents groupes y coexistent – un theme souvent aborde par Remy dans ses travaux, qu’ils portent sur la morphologie urbaine, les regimes de distance-proximite ou les parcours residentiels des immigrants. Les propositions analytiques formulees par Remy sur ces differents themes seront mobilisees pour montrer l’interet d’abandonner une vision surplombante de l’integration conduisant soit a un quartier homogene car habite par une seule population, soit a un espace dans lequel se retrouveraient toutes les composantes de la societe urbaine. Dans une approche pragmatiste au contraire, le quartier se voit plutot attribuer des significations multiples qui emergent des interactions qui y prennent place.
