Bibliographic record
Abstract
This article explores the representation of Otherness within the insular population of a small, unnamed Greek island, and the ensuing xenophobia in the novel Le mauvais œil by author Pan Bouyoucas. With this novel, Bouyoucas manipulates the notion of the “evil eye”, a popular superstition in Mediterranean culture. By exploiting the theme of superstition, the author offers a humorous and moving account of the social interactions amongst the islanders, showing that prejudice works both ways. Bouyoucas uses aptronyms to communicate irony in this novel, in which we observe Bouyoucas’ take on the experience of immigration, and his commentary on a homogeneous island society that seeks to blame its problems on the stranger in its midst.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
