Abstract
Dans l’histoire du Quebec, les evenements de 1837 et 1838 tiennent une place d’une importance indiscutable. Revolution manquee, l’ombre de cet echec plane sur l’imaginaire politique jusqu’aux referendums de la fin du xxe siecle. Mais ces evenements sont aussi un moment fondateur d’une importance insurpassee pour une ideologie qui a pourtant connu plusieurs mutations : le republicanisme quebecois. Pour Yvan Lamonde, ce moment, source d’une ambivalence identitaire profonde, se represente d’abord par deux personnages complementaires mais opposes, comme les deux hemispheres d’un cerveau : Louis-Joseph Papineau, le « Grand Liberateur » qui exprime avec constance son opposition au regime colonial et son adhesion au projet republicain americain, et Etienne Parent, journaliste nationaliste et populiste avant la lettre, reformiste et modere de la « famille de Quebec ». Ce dernier est aussi le maitre a penser de Louis-Hyppolite La Fontaine, ce Patriote convaincu devenu, apres la defaite de Saint-Charles, le contempteur de Papineau et qui reussit bien a ostraciser celui-ci. S’ajoute a cette distribution le Dr Cyrille-Hector-Octave Cote, au sang chaud, figure plutot rare du revolutionnaire anticlerical. C’est au croisement de ces quatre chemins que se sont trouves les femmes et les hommes de l’epoque. Cet ouvrage, d’une remarquable richesse et d’une grande clarte, presente pour la premiere fois la topographie des idees et des voies politiques proposees en 1837 et en 1838.
