Il y a cinq ans, j’ai rencontré des familles roms de Roumanie vivant dans un bidonville de la région lyonnaise. C’était la première fois que je pénétrais dans un tel endroit (mais c’était loin d’être la dernière), et que je me retrouvais face à des personnes qui vivent dans des conditions aussi inhumaines, tout en étant les victimes d’une discrimination dont je n’avais jamais vu l’équivalent. Je suis écrivaine, et chercheuse. Mon réflexe – tout en nouant des liens avec V., une mère de famille nombreuse, et en tentant d’apprendre à la soutenir de la bonne façon (c’est-à-dire de la façon qui lui convienne, à elle, selon ses choix et ses valeurs) – a été de rendre compte non seulement de ce dont j’étais témoin, mais de ma propre position, moi, gadji, privilégiée (qui pouvais perdre ce privilège du jour au lendemain, comme nous tous), mais également immigrée, et appartenant à un groupe (les « Arabes ») dont la position dans la société française actuelle n’est pas non plus anodine. Ce texte raconte donc le parcours de la femme, de l’immigrée, de la citoyenne et de l’autrice que je suis, en réfléchissant également aux problèmes qu’a pu poser au fil du temps et que pose encore le choix d’écrire au sujet de ces personnes auxquelles je suis personnellement liée, attachée, et de les représenter.
