L’(im)mobilité de l’œuvre de Melchior Mbonimpa et L’esquive de la World Literature

Abstract
<p class="p1">The position and role of the French transnational literature produced in the periphery are at the center of this pilot study, which aim is to further the reflection on world literature from the perspective of literary works excluded from the global circulation. Which are the positions and conditions on the literary market and which are the relationships between these works, local literatures and world literature ? These inquiries are governing this study of a specific case observed in the French-Ontarian region in Canada, where the work of the Canadian-Burundian author Melchior Mbonimpa is both produced and awarded, still without passing the boundaries of this limited space. Context and content of the novel <em>Le Dernier roi faiseur de pluie</em> [The last rainmaker king] (2003), awarded in 2006, the year when international awards favored transnational authors, are compared and related, in order to draw attention to the continuum local-global and to links that the work constructs between the periphery and the center. On the one hand, distanced from world literature, Mbonimpa’s work still contributes to the construction of global literature in circulation, which for the major part consists of transnational works. On the other hand, affiliations reflected by context and content of the studied novel, suggest that the work also participates in the construction of peripheral literary spaces in Canada and Africa. <p class="p1"> <p class="p2">La position et le rôle de la littérature francophone et transnationale produite dans la périphérie font l’objet de cette étude pilote, qui vise une réflexion sur la <em>world literature</em> à partir des oeuvres qui ne sont pas incluses dans la circulation globale des lettres. Quelles sont leurs positions et leurs conditions sur le marché littéraire et quels rapports entretiennent ces oeuvres avec les littératures locales, ainsi qu’avec la littérature <em>world</em> ? Ces interrogations sont au centre de cette étude d’un cas particulier observé dans la région franco-ontarienne au Canada. Dans cette périphérie, l’oeuvre de l’auteur canadien et burundais Melchior Mbonimpa est à la fois produite et primée, sans pour autant circuler au-delà des frontières de cet espace limité. Le contexte et le contenu de son roman <em>Le Dernier roi faiseur de pluie</em> (2003), primé en 2006, l’année où les prix littéraires internationaux ont privilégié des auteurs transnationaux, sont mis en parallèle, avec l’objectif d’attirer l’attention sur le continuum local-global et sur les liens que construit l’oeuvre entre la périphérie et le centre. D’une part, écartée de la littérature <em>world</em>, l’oeuvre de Mbonimpa contribue néanmoins à construire le fond de cette littérature globale en circulation dont la plus grande part consiste d’oeuvres transnationales, d’autre part, les appartenances périphériques reflétées par le contexte et le contenu du roman étudié suggèrent que l’oeuvre participe également à la construction des espaces littéraires périphériques au Canada et en Afrique.
